SLU Cancer Center Annual Report 2011
Dear Friends and Colleagues:

It is my pleasure to present the 2011 Annual Report of the Saint Louis University Hospital Cancer Committee and the Saint Louis University Cancer Center. This year we saw exceptional growth in our services and continued to expand our compliment of subspecialists through the recruitment of several physicians who are highlighted in this report.

This annual report highlights the Bone Marrow Transplantation program led by Dr. Scheuning who came to Saint Louis University Cancer Center from Vanderbilt University in May 2011. The Hereditary Cancer Program, led for more than ten years by Dr. Suzanne Mahon, is also highlighted. In addition, the report details the Center’s more than 90 outreach activities including the March Cancer Center Community Health Fair where 176 cancer screenings were performed and Cancer Center services were displayed.

I am pleased to introduce several new physicians who brought clinical expertise and novel research programs to the Cancer Center in 2011. In Hematology and Oncology, Drs. Mark Fesler and Freidrich Scheuning; in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Drs. Layla Hajjafar, Omer Junaidi and Jason Taylor; in Gynecologic Oncology, Dr. C. William Helm; in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Ron Walker; in Oncologic Surgery, Drs. Theresa Schwartz and Jula Verrapong; in Abdominal Transplant Surgery, Drs. Peter Horton and Mark Dy-Liacco; in Neurosurgery, Drs. Sameer Elbabaa and Fangxian Chen; in Psychiatry, Drs. Melanie McKean and Anjan Bhattacharyya; and in Pathology, Drs. Guilan Chen, Necat Havlioglu and Eric Staros. More information about our new physicians can be found on the SLUCare website.

In 2012 we will expand our physical Cancer Center and continue to expand our cancer services. We will launch a new Cancer Center branding campaign that showcases our multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach to care. I invite you to “stay tuned” as we expand our mission of providing superior scientific and therapeutic approaches for the prevention and treatment of cancer through excellence in research, education, patient care, community outreach and service.

Sincerely yours,

Mark A. Varvares, M.D., FACS
