Saint Louis University Cancer Center Brings the Interactive “Super Colon” to St. Louis
In an effort to help spread awareness among the St. Louis community about colon cancer, The Super Colon, an 8-foot tall, 20-foot long replica of a human colon, will be at Saint Louis University Hospital on March 9, 2009.  The Super Colon is an incredible, inflatable, interactive colon that teaches people about the risks, symptoms, prevention, early detection and treatment options for colorectal cancer. As part of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Super Colon has been featured across the country and serves as an educational tool to teach the importance of colorectal cancer screenings.  Colorectal cancer is successfully treated nearly 90 percent of the time when detected early, yet it remains a leading cause of cancer deaths.

“This is a great opportunity for the public to see and understand how a colon looks and how easy it is to have a screening that could save their life,” says Mark Varvares, MD, Director of the Saint Louis University Hospital Cancer Center. “And why not have some fun with it, as long as the message is getting through!”

The Super Colon will be in the dining area of the hospital’s cafeteria.  This event is open to the public. Physicians and staff from SLUCare’s department of Gastroenterology will be on hand to answer questions.

Saint Louis University Hospital is located at 3635 Vista Avenue at Grand, approximately one-half mile north of Interstate 44. The cafeteria is on the main level of the hospital. Guests should park in the hospital’s attached garage on Vista.
