Saint Louis University Hospital Cancer Program Earns Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation
Monday, 29 October 2012

ST. LOUIS - Citing strong patient outcomes and cancer prevention activities, the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) granted Saint Louis University Hospital a three-year accreditation with commendation.

Maintaining CoC accreditation is a voluntary commitment by a cancer program ensuring patients will have access to a full scope of services required to diagnose, treat, rehabilitate, and support patients with cancer and their families.

“The continued accreditation with commendation is a result of our continued strong collaboration and progress across many areas of the cancer program,” says Mark Varvares, MD, director of the Saint Louis University Cancer Center. “Efforts such as our new outpatient bone marrow transplant program, expansion of many multidisciplinary clinical programs, growth of outreach and preventive efforts as illustrated by the recent creation of the Saint Louis University Center for Cancer Prevention Research and Outreach (CCPRO) and nationally-recognized patient-centered programs such as music therapy help us earn such recognition.”

The accreditation at SLU Hospital -- three-year with commendation – is given to programs that comply with all standards and receive a commendation rating for one or more standard. Commendation was given for several areas including: outcomes analysis, compliance with College of American Pathologists protocols and strong prevention and early detection programs.

“We were also commended for cancer registration for cancer registry staff and overall cancer-related quality improvements,” says Nancy Noedel, RN, MSN, chief quality officer at Saint Louis University Hospital.

Established by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) in 1922, the multidisciplinary CoC establishes standards to ensure quality, multidisciplinary, and comprehensive cancer care delivery in health care settings; conducts surveys in health care settings to assess compliance with those standards.
