Volunteer Services

Volunteer Services

Saint Louis University Hospital is nationally recognized as an academic medical center that specializes in providing high end medical care to the most seriously ill and injured patients in our community. We rely on highly coordinated teamwork to address the needs of these critical patients and their families.

It takes a special kind of person to work in this fast-paced, ground-breaking environment, and volunteers are a necessary part of assuring that those who arrive at our door receive the very best care and compassionate service.

As a volunteer, you are an essential part of what we do.

Additional Requirements

Once chosen to be part of the volunteer program, candidates will be contacted to schedule a health screening and complete a background check. The process can take 3-6 weeks.

Background check. A background check is required for all volunteer candidates over 18 years of age. Applicants must complete and sign a background check authorization and information form and may need to present their social security card and, if necessary, provide documentation of authorization to work. These are processed through SLU Hospital’s human resources department and may take up to two weeks to receive clearance. Background checks from other facilities are not accepted.

Health Assessment. All selected candidates are required to receive a health screening (free of charge) from SLU Hospital’s employee health department, located on campus. This screening is a must even if candidates have been screened recently by other institutions. However, documentation of a recent screening may be requested.

A two (2) step PPD skin test, substance abuse screening and combination H1N1/influenza vaccine are required at the time of placement to ensure that volunteers are not placed in positions that would pose an undue risk to them or to patients.  Volunteers are thereafter required to have an annual one-step PPD test and flu shot.

Orientation. Once the candidate is officially cleared from their health screening and background check, an orientation session will be scheduled.
