SLU Hospital Receives HHS Medal of Honor

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently presented Saint Louis University Hospital with a medal of honor for its achievements in organ donation. The metal of honor recognizes the effort SLU Hospital co-workers make to build awareness of the need for organ and tissue donation.   MHA Honors SLU Hospital with the Donate Life Award Saint Louis University Hospital was also honored with the “Donate Life Award” during the Missouri Hospital Association’s (MHA) convention.  The award, presented under the auspices of The Health Alliance of MidAmerica, recognizes outstanding accomplishments and best practices to increase organ and tissue donation.   

Milestone reached with 100th Kidney Transplant

A milestone was reached this November when the 100th kidney transplant of 2006 was performed at Saint Louis University Hospital. This is the first time in the history of the abdominal transplant program that SLU Hospital has performed 100 kidney transplants.  

UnitedHealth Premium Cardiac Specialty Center

Saint Louis University Hospital is one of only 16 hospitals in the country that have been designated a UnitedHealth Premiumsm Cardiac Specialty Center. The national program evaluates quality processes, adherence to evidence-based approaches, compliance with nationally-recognized guidelines and the ability to handle cardiac treatment through a continuum of stages.   Get With the Guidelines Program Saint Louis University Hospital is a proud participant in the American Heart Association’s Get With the Guidelines Program. This nation-wide hospital quality improvement program ensure that heart patients receive treatment and discharge information consistent with American Heart Association standards to reduce the chance of a second heart attack. Saint Louis University Hospital has been designated a Get With the Guidelines Initial Performance Achievement Award recipient, recognizing the hospital for at least 85 percent compliance in five categories for a minimum of 90 consecutive days.  

The Commission on Cancer Grants Special Approval with Commendation

In November 2006, the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons has granted the Saint Louis University Cancer Center a Three-Year Approval with Commendation. Only one in four cancer programs at hospitals in the United States receive this special approval. A facility receives the three-year approval following the on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a Commendation level of compliance with one or more standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program. SLU Cancer Center received commendation in seven areas including: outcomes and analysis; abstracting time frame; quality of NCDB data submission; AJCC staging; patient guidelines; prevention and early detection; and cancer related improvements.
