      <description><![CDATA[   <p>  A recent report on KSDK compared hospital infection rates throughout the region.       <description><![CDATA[    <p>Saint Louis University Hospital and Des Peres Hospital announced plans to invest almost $27 million in capital during 2006. At SLU Hospital, plans include adding a 64-slice PET/CT and 3-tesla magnetic resonance imaging, expansion of the Post-Anesthesia Recovery Unit, updates to technology in Endoscopy, renovation of the hospital lobby and waiting rooms, and purchasing equipment for the Laboratories and Operating Rooms. Other projects underway include adding a 32-40 slice CT, updating cardiac equipment, and creating a Center for Advanced Geriatrics.              </p>  <p> “In addition to enabling our hospitals to remain competitive, capital investment in new technology  is critical to maintaining our Hospital’s mission as an academic medical center,” says Crystal L.       <description><![CDATA[    <p>One of our volunteers has big brown eyes and a great big heart for people.  His very presence makes people smile.  He is Maverick--a Yellow Labrador Retriever!   <p class=MsoNormal>Maverick is a certified Canine Good Citizen and he and his handler, Carol are graduates of the Humane Society's pet therapy training program.   Maverick has been specially trained to remain steady and calm around wheelchairs, falling IV poles, and other situations where most dogs would run and hide.  </p>  <p class=MsoNormal>Pet therapy has been shown to lower patient blood pressure, decrease depression, improve communication skills, and generally improve patient condition.  </p>  <p class=MsoNormal>The Saint Louis University Hospital Volunteer Pet Therapy Program is provided in the Acute Care for the Elderly Unit and the Adult Psychiatric Floor.
