ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis University Hospital will begin a $1.5 million emergency department expansion in February, adding additional rooms to the region’s busiest trauma center.

The expansion is a 16-18 week project, adding five additional rooms, a new nurses’ station and workspace.

“This space gives our patients more privacy and is something we’ve been waiting for anxiously,” says Laurie Byrne, MD, director of emergency medicine at Saint Louis University. “Volume continues to grow yearly and we need the space.”

Volume has climbed by more than 10,000 patients over the past decade to just over 39,000 patients in 2012, according to Helen Sandkuhl, RN, administrative director of nursing, emergency, trauma and disaster services.

“With fewer emergency rooms in the city of St. Louis, we have seen added volume and this expansion is necessary to address that,” says Sandkuhl.

St. Louis-based BSA LifeStructures is the architect and McGrath and Associates, Inc. is the contractor.

Saint Louis University Hospital's Emergency Department treats more than 100 emergency cases each day and more than 39,000 cases per year. As a Level I Trauma Center – certified as Level I in both Missouri and Illinois by the American College of Surgeons – the hospital treats more than 2,300 trauma cases annually.
