Job Shadowing 
SHADOWING EXPERIENCE AT SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL 
 
 
 
 

The purpose of this program is to allow members of the health care community to explore and learn inside the great teaching environment that Saint Louis University Hospital offers. This experience is beneficial for both parties; as a hospital, we can develop a perception for professionals trying to join our prestigious team. At the same time, shadowers get to learn about and observe hospital methodologies on the front lines of patient care.  The program consists of multiple sessions between the mentor and individual shadowing. Applicants can shadow for a maximum of 5 times and durations may vary depending on department availability. 

Interested personnel should consider this opportunity a great way to discover their career interests, learn more about the hospital environment and learn about the overall SLU Hospital culture.  

Once an application has been submitted, the Sponsoring Department will be responsible for the initial approval of the request. This includes the determination of the Sponsoring Department’s ability and willingness to provide the experience requested. Following the Sponsoring Department’s approval, all requests for the Shadow experience will be forwarded to the Human Resources Department.  

In order to be considered for a Shadowing experience, all of the following requirements must be completed by Shadowing candidates:   

  • Completion of application form  (Click here for application)
  • Approval from Sponsoring Department and Human Resource Department where you would like shadow
  • Completion of requirements outlined in Shadow Pre-Acceptance Checklist

POST-ACCEPTANCE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS* 

 

·         Confidentiality Statement (document will be downloaded to website) (Click here for confidentiality statement)

·         Current immunization records

·         Must show record of 2-step PPD test within the last 6 months

·         Influenza vaccine in the past 12 months (if applying between Sept 1-March 31)

·         Documentation of Tetanus (Tdap) within the last 10 years

·         Records of MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella), Inactivated Poliovirus, Varicella (Chicken Pox), and Hepatitis B (three shot series)

·         Hospital’s smoking and tobacco use policy (“Tobacco Free Policy”) (Click here to view policy)

DRESS CODE

  • NO jeans or sweatpants
  • NO tank tops or bare midriffs
  • NO baggy clothing or clothing that drags on the floor

  • NO dangling jewelry
  • NO ball caps or hats
  • Body piercings and tattoos should be covered

FAQs: 

  • What is the first step in the shadowing process? The first step is completing the application. Once approved you will be contacted by a representative from the Human Resources Department
  • What areas are accepting shadowing applications? See “departments available for shadowing” section for updated listing
  • How far in advance should I submit my application? At least two weeks in advance
  • How soon should I expect a response? Our response time is approximately  5 business days but it may vary depending on the volume of applications at the time
  • I have a job shadow today, but I’m sick. What should I do? If you feel sick please contact the HR department to reschedule your shadowing experience as soon as you can
  • What is the minimum age required to shadow? 18 years old
  • What should I wear to the job shadow? Dress business casual.  Read “dress code” section for more details
  • I completed the first step. What should I do next? A determination will be made by the department manager for which you wish to shadow. Once a decision has been reached the HR department will contact you for next steps
  • What immunization records do I need to provide prior to starting? See “list of required immunizations”
