should not eat or drink anything for four hours before your visit. If you
know you are allergic to iodine, which is the contrast injected into
your vein, you should let your doctor know.
-- Diagnostic X-rays
If you are having a basic X-ray of the chest, arms or legs, you don't
need to do anythign special before this test.
-- Routine EEG (electroencephalography)
Please do not use hairspray or oils in your hair before your EEG or
your sleep-deprived EEG. Hair weaves also make it difficult to
perform these tests. Medications may be taken prior to these tests.
You may eat regular meals.
-- Sleep Deprived EEG
For a sleep deprived EEG, you must be awake a full 24 hours before
your scheduled exam. You may eat regular meals. Please do not
drink beverages or eat foods with caffeine in them (coffee, soda, tea,
chocolate) after midnight before your test. You may take your
medication prior to your test.

Please do not use hairspray or oils in your hair or body lotion on
your skin before this test. You may eat your regular meals and take
your medication.
-- MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
For MRIs of the kidney, liver, pancreas and spleen, please do not
eat or drink anything after midnight before your test.
-- PET/CT Scan
Please do not eat or drink anything except water for four hours before
your test. Also, do not engage in strenuous exercise for 24 hours
before your test. You may drink water at any time. Drinking extra
water is helpful. You may also take your medications, except insulin,
at any time. If you are a diabetic on insulin, please call us before the
day of your test for special instructions. Your test will take two to three
hours. Wear comfortable clothing, without any metal, if possible.
Women should wear a bra. Gowns are available, if needed.
-- QST (Quantitative Sensory Testing)
You do not have to do anything special before this test. You may
eat your regular meals and take your medication.
-- Ultrasound
For ultrasounds of your abdominal region (stomach, bile ducts, liver,
gallbladder or pancreas), please do not eat or drink anything 12
hours before the test. For an ultrasound of your urinary tract, bladder
or pelvis, you must have a full bladder during the test. This might be
uncomfortable. Please drink at least 32 ounces of water 45 minutes
before your test is completed.
Cardiovascular and Respiratory Services
-- EKG (electrocardiography)
You do not have to do anything special before this test.
-- Echocardiography Tests
If you are having a surface echo, you do not have to do anything
special before this test. If you are having a stress echo (dobutamine

test. However, you may take any medications the morning of your test
with small sips of water. Please bring a list of your current

For EIA, do not exercise six hours before the test.
-- Vascular Tests
You do not have to do anything special for an arterial, venous or
carotid exam.
Laboratory Services
Many laboratory tests require that you "fast" before your test. Fasting means that you cannot eat, drink or smoke at least 10 to 12 hours before your visit. To be sure of the specific requirements for your test, you should ask your doctor for instructions. If your laboratory testing includes in-home urine or stool collections, TenetCare will provide you with the materials you need. At that time you will be given specific collection instructins for your laboratory testing. For example, for a 24-hour urine collection, we will asl that you collect all urine during a 24-hour period, refrigerate the specimen during the collection time, and label it with your full name, as well as the date and time that the collection was started and complete. If you have any questions or concerns about how to prepare for a laboratory test at TenetCare, please contact your doctor to review the requirements.
Other Services
-- Angiography
Because of the wide array of procedures and tests performed in
Angiography, please consult with your physician for your preparation
instructions.
-- CyberKnife
Before your CyberKnife visit, a custom soft mask (for head/neck
treatments) or a body mold (for spinal and body treatments) must be
formed in a single painless process. While being fitted with a mask
or body mold, you will undergo a CT scan. For spinal and body
treatments, a short outpatient procedure using local anesthesia
may be required to implant small metal markers (fiducials) near the
site to be treated. The fiducials enable the CyberKnife to track
the target during treatment.
-- Pain Management
You do not have to do anything special before your initial visit.
-- Pre-admission Testing
Your appointment will last approximately two hours. You will meet
with an anesthesiologist and a physician and/or nurse practitioner
to discuss your anesthesia and your procedure. The nurse will
perform an assessment and the doctor will examine you. If you have
any other testing, such as lab work, EKG or X-ray, they will be done
in conjunction with your appointment. Please bring a list of
medications you are currently taking, including dosages. If you
have an Advance Directive, please bring a copy.
