Saint Louis University Hospital is a Level I Trauma Center that sees the most critical and severely injured emergency patients. It is the only American College of Surgeons' verified Trauma Center in the area that is certified as Level I in both Missouri and Illinois. Annually, the hospital treats more than 2,200 trauma cases.

The front door of the trauma center is Saint Louis University Hospital's Emergency Department, which treats 80-85 emergency cases each day and more than 30,000 cases per year. The department has 24 treatment areas and three trauma rooms. Patients arrive at the hospital by ambulance, walking in or helicopter. All full-time SLUCare physicians in the department are board certified in emergency medicine and/or internal medicine.

As a leader in trauma care and emergency medicine, Saint Louis University Hospital offers several trauma and emergency medicine continuing education courses for nurses and physicians.
