SLU Buys Shuttered South Side Hospital

ST. LOUIS -- A closed hospital in south St. Louis is getting new life thanks to a recent transaction between Saint Louis University and Tenet Healthcare Corporation.

Saint Louis University has closed on the purchase of Compton Heights Hospital, known for most of its history as Incarnate Word Hospital, located at 3545 Lafayette Ave. The University purchased the building from Tenet Healthcare Corporation. Terms were not disclosed.

The University will renovate the building for office and classroom space. The building will not be used as a hospital.

Earlier in the fall Saint Louis University President Lawrence Biondi, SJ, had asked the entire University community for ideas regarding how to best use the building should Saint Louis University acquire it. Saint Louis University’s design and construction staff have been working with architects to determine the best use of the complex.

Compton Heights Hospital had been vacant since it was closed on May 31, 2000.

The building and surrounding property will give Saint Louis University an additional 304,000 square feet. University officials expect to announce what will be housed in the new facility sometime in mid-February.
