Employee of the Month

Kevin Geffe

Emergency Department Technician

What kind of graduation gift do you give a college senior who will start medical school this coming fall? If he is Kevin Geffe, Emergency Department technician and soon-to-be graduate from Saint Louis University with a degree in health information management, naming him Employee of the Month is the perfect gift.

One of the first things Helen Sandkuhl, RN, director of nursing, Emergency Department, mentions about Kevin is how energetic he is. This is a good quality to have if you are going to school full time and working as a technician approximately 30 hours a week.

"When I'm not working, I'm studying," Kevin says.

Kevin has worked for the Emergency Department for three years. He has the highest seniority among the tech staff, and part of the reason he has lasted so long is the nature of the work itself.

"This has not only been a job, it has been an occupation where I have the ability to always learn new things. And, no matter how menial the task, in some way, I know I am affecting someone's life," Kevin says.

This approach to duties has made him a stand-out in the Emergency Department, according to Helen. "He is a young gentlemen who takes a lot of responsibility for what he does. The physicians and nurses know they can rely on Kevin. He takes pride in everything he does, and he knows he makes a difference down here. He truly is a role model," Helen says.

His experiences working in the Emergency Department have also provided Kevin with valuable lessons he can use in his future medical career. Right now, Kevin is considering orthopedics, obstetrics or, of course, emergency medicine.

"The educational experience I have received is probably the biggest benefit of my employment. It has cemented my desire and my love for medicine. In my opinion, anyone who wants to go to medical school should spend some time in a Level I trauma center to experience the reality of practicing medicine," he says.

Kevin's practical approach to being an emergency room tech made him the perfect candidate recently to train six new techs. The new day-long program he developed included a Power Point presentation that he created on his own time.

"I thought it was important that we spend a day together without working on the floor," Kevin says. "I wanted the new techs to thoroughly grasp what goes on in the Emergency Department. I also always tell new techs there is a rhythm in a trauma room when a patient comes in. The group has to work together to find that rhythm."

After he graduates this spring and prepares to start medical school at the University of New England in Maine, Kevin says he will miss the people in the Emergency Department.

"The staff is great. People come here often in acute circumstances. Giving them medical attention takes a team effort, not just one person's. The staff at SLU Hospital is a great group. I will miss them," Kevin says.
