Cruz-Flores will be honored with the Hugh McCulloch Award for his contributions in increasing stroke awareness and advancing treatment in the St. Louis metropolitan region. Hugh McCulloch, M.D., who was from St. Louis, was one of the founders of the American Heart Association.

This is the first time that the award has gone to a neurologist. Cruz-Flores, who has served as a stroke ambassador and spokesman for the American Heart Association, will be honored with the award at the St. Louis Chapter of the American Heart Association's annual Heart Ball on April 17 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

A professor of neurology, Cruz-Flores specializes in treating stroke patients. He directs Saint Louis University's Souers Stroke Institute and Saint Louis University Hospital's MidAmerica Stroke Network, which extends acute stroke care to rural, community and critical access hospitals throughout Missouri and central and southern Illinois. Cruz-Flores, whose research has focused on clot-busting medication that can reduce the long-term disabilities from stroke, says he feels fortunate to receive the award.

"I am humbled to be in the same company with the previous recipients of this award," he says. "However, I would be remiss if I didn't recognize this award is the reflection of a shared vision of a team of dedicated colleagues and staff that works together to save lives."

Cruz-Flores has published more than 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts and monographs; presented at national and international meetings; and participated in many national and international landmark studies in stroke care.

"It is gratifying to be recognized by my peers for the work I love to do," says Cruz-Flores.

Recognized by neurology residents as an outstanding teacher and lecturer, Cruz-Flores has received multiple awards for his excellent and compassionate medical care.
