The awards recognize Saint Louis University Hospital for ensuring care that’s consistent with the most up-to-date scientific guidelines.

“SLU Hospital is dedicated to improving the quality of care for our heart failure and stroke patients, and the American Heart Association helps us accomplish this goal by tracking and measuring our success in meeting internationally-respected guidelines,” says Nancy Noedel, RN, chief quality officer at Saint Louis University Hospital.

This recognition comes on the heels of new designation recently given to SLU Hospital by the state of Missouri. As one of only five hospitals in the St. Louis region designated a Level 1 stroke center, SLU Hospital is recognized as a “a receiving center staffed and equipped to provide total care for every aspect of stroke care, including care for those patients with complications that also functions as a resource center for the hospitals within that region, and conducts research.”

“At SLU we are able to handle strokes that require immediate treatment and intervention and have immediate access to neurologists, interventionalists and neurosurgeons,” says Eli Feen, MD, neurologist at SLU Hospital and director of the MidAmerica Stroke Network, a collaboration of over 60 hospitals in the bi-state region who share knowledge, technology and expertise to deliver quality stroke care.

To achieve Gold Performance standards, hospitals must follow treatment guidelines in certain key measures at least 85 percent of the time and maintain that level of performance for consecutive twelve month intervals. Saint Louis University Hospital was in a category one step higher with Gold Plus, representing an additional 75 percent compliance with module specific measures for at least twelve consecutive months. To earn the additional Elite Plus status, SLU Hospital exceeded Heart Association guidelines for administering the clot-busting drug tPA.
