ST. LOUIS - A new Mayo Clinic study says too much coffee can actually kill.
The researchers found drinking 28 cups of coffee or more per week increased a person’s odds of dying prematurely by 21 percent, while the risk was more than 50 percent higher in adults under 55 years old.
The study concludes:
“… it may be appropriate to recommend that younger people, in particular, avoid heavy coffee consumption (>28 cups per week or >4 cups in a typical day).”
So, should you not go too crazy in filling up your cup? Well …
Michael Lim, MD, co-director of the Center for Comprehensive Cardiovascular Care (C4) at Saint Louis University Hospital and a SLUCare physician, says it’s hard to break this down to just one statement.
“Other studies say coffee has good anti-oxidants, while others say it raises adrenaline,” says Dr. Lim. “”People who are drinking more coffee in higher stress lifestyles likely have other things going on and that combination does lead to a higher rate of dying earlier.”.
He also adds that people should be aware of their overall heart health and, “We should do everything in moderation. Coffee included.”
