October 25, 2013, ST. LOUIS - Pastoral care at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital today honored those physicians who go above and beyond with the annual Caring Physician Awards.
The service in the hospital chapel honored five attendings and residents who were selected for this year’s Caring Physician Award:
Bruce Bacon, MD, director of abdominal transplantation and co-director of the Saint Louis University Liver Center
Ghazala Hayat, MD, director of neuromuscular service and the clinical neurophysiology laboratory
Peter Horton, MD, associate professor of surgery
Jad Raffoul, MD, internal medicine resident
Maegan Wallace, MD, orthopaedic surgery resident
This year, forty-nine staff, medical students, administration and physicians nominated thirty-one nominees. Nominations were solely based on how physicians carry out the mission of Saint Louis University and Saint Louis University Hospital. When selecting a physician, nominators looked at criteria represented in seven areas:
1) The physician excels in working with patients, families and staff.
2) The physician treats everyone as a sacred human being.
3) The physician respects all patient’s right to life and to a dignified death.
4) The physician contributes to quality care of our patients.
5) The physician is open to holistic, innovative and spiritual care.
6) The physician makes contributions to this hospital community.
7) The physician makes contributions to the community at large.
All nominations were truly appreciated, as it shows each nominees significance, talent, and overall appreciation for their work. The nominees for this year were:

The “Caring Physician Award” commemorates the feast of Saint Luke, the patron saint of physicians.
The awards will be presented to each physician by a chaplain who has collaborated with him or her in ministry and service to the patients and families for the glory of God and the health of God’s people.
