Congratulations to Karen Horner, RN, BSN, MA, winner of SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital’s quarterly “Leading by Example” award.
To Horner, leading by example is all about one thing – the patient.
“For me, I put the patient at the heart of all my decisions,” says Horner. “If you look through their eyes, it’s a valuable perspective and helps you keep focus on what matters. After all, that’s why we’re here.”
Horner is administrative director of inpatient surgical services at SLU Hospital, where she moved three and a half years ago after working locally at a community hospital.
“For me, SLU is the best of both worlds,” she says. “I love being at a teaching facility, but at most they can be too large and you lose that personal feel. Here, we’re just the right size and you have the opportunity to build relationships among others that ultimately is better for the patient.”
A graduate from Central Missouri State University, Horner was a student at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City before moving cross state. She is a mother of two children – a nine year-old boy and five year-old girl.
