February 25, 2015, ST. LOUIS – We have a great story of living kidney donation we want to share. After battling a kidney condition since he was 17, St. Louis County Police Detective Dan Keim was put on the kidney transplant list in 2013. His kidney function was rapidly deteriorating and he needed to find a living donor to help speed up the transplant process.
Keim found a donor in a high school friend and was transplanted in January. FOX2’s Katie Kormann talked to Keim about his transplant in the above story.
Currently, there are more than 100,000 people waiting on the deceased donor list in the United States but only approximately 10,000 deceased donor kidney transplants are performed each year. So, many transplant candidates die or become too sick before a deceased donor organ becomes available. Living donor kidney transplantation allows individuals in need to by-pass the lengthy waiting list and get on to a longer, healthier life much sooner.
