Over the past week, news from Boston has dominated attention after two bombs exploded at the Boston Marathon.

News reports indicated over 150 patients were injured at the scene with three casualties. With so many injured, hospitals like Massachusetts General became front and center, saving countless lives.

In our region, how prepared would we be? St. Louis is quite fortunate to have three Level-1 trauma centers (including SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital — the region's first American College of Surgeons' verified Trauma Center certified as Level I in both Missouri and Illinois), all of which participate in regional disaster drills and have experience in treating multiple traumas.

"In St. Louis we get a decent amount of trauma," says Craig Krausz, MD. "We see a lot of gunshot wounds, we see a lot of people in bad car accidents and with that gives a little bit more confidence and a little bit more stability in treating patients who are very ill."
