Main Town, USA--Treasury Secretary James Doe has announced the appointment of Johnny Doe, III, CEO of the Model Hospital in Main Town, to the 2002 U.S. Savings Bonds Volunteer Committee. Mr. Doe will serve as the committee's Local Area Chairman. He will kick off the campaign at 11:30 on Thursday, April 25 at a luncheon at The Club. Former Football Coach I. M. Awinner will be the guest speaker for the event.

Doe will head a committee of business, banking, labor, government, and media leaders who in cooperation with U.S. Savings Bonds Direct, will assist in promoting bond sales among Alabamians in their workplaces, at their financial institutions, and online via their computers.

Doe joined Tenet Healthcare, operator of Model Hospital, in 2002. He served as CEO for This Center Hospital and Local Hospital Medical Center in the area. In 1999 he became CEO of Tenet's Campus of Hospitals before moving to Texas.

Doe is a graduate of the University of Hard Knocks and began his healthcare executive career post-graduation from Juke University. His work spanned the states of North Carolina, Louisiana, Texas, and California, before reaching Alabama.

The 2002 committee is comprised of community leaders from the public and private sectors including elected officials, senior executives from major corporations and educators. Their role is to coordinate the effort of volunteers nationwide to encourage buying and holding of U.S. Savings Bonds. Their messages this year will be spreading the word about the two kinds of bonds available to Americans to own: Series EE and the newer Series I Savings Bonds.

Committee members will also bring attention to the recently introduced Savings Bonds Direct, a virtual store where customers can buy savings bonds 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Online programs also offer information about savings bonds and assistance in tracking their value. The savings bonds website is at www.savingsbonds.gov.

The involvement of volunteers in promoting the importance of saving and the value of savings bonds remains a valuable assist to the Treasury Department almost 40 years after the start of the National Volunteer Committee program. Members are actively involved in annual saving awareness campaigns and other promotional activities.
