Saint Louis University Hospital - along with our SLUCare physician partners - is the only local hospital to be named among the Top 50 Hospitals in the United States by AARP's Modern Maturity magazine in its May/June 2002 issue. SLU Hospital also was ranked by Modern Maturity as one of the top 10 leading renal care hospitals. You can find more information at the Modern Maturity web site (click here).
Saint Louis University Hospital is number 30 on the Top 50 Hospitals list. Consumers' Checkbook, a nonprofit consumer education organization, rated the quality of care for adults at acute care hospitals in major metropolitan areas in the U.S. For the past two years, Consumers' Checkbook researchers surveyed more than 20,000 physicians and analyzed statistics from federal records and accreditation scores to rank 1,308 hospitals nationwide. The final list of 50 Top Hospitals was selected using the following criteria:
- Accreditation scores
- Training: The extent of training a hospital provides for physicians based upon our affiliation with the Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
- Physician ratings: percentage of surveyed doctors rating a hospital "very good" or "excellent" for high-risk adult surgery.
- Mortality rates for various types of medical and surgical cases - percentage of Medicare patients (admitted between October 1, 1996, and September 30, 1999) who died within 30 days of being admitted to the hospital.
Saint Louis University Hospital's overall score was 7788 - the number-one ranked hospital scored 8797, and the national average score was 5418. We are very proud of these rankings, which reflect well upon the care our physicians and employees provide to our patients and the strong emphasis placed upon caring for St. Louis seniors.
