Register for the UNDY 5000 to fight colon cancer

March is colon cancer awareness month and to help raise awareness, SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital is a proud sponsor of the annual UNDY 5000, March 23 in Forest Park.

The event consists a 5K or one mile fun run or walk with proceeds going to colorectal cancer research through the Colon Cancer Alliance.

The fun thing that sets the event apart however, is the participants’ attire. People are encouraged to wear their favorite boxer shorts for the “UNDY” and participants receive UNDY 5000 boxers as part of registration. For those who register with the Saint Louis University Hospital team, participants will also receive a pair SLU Hospital boxers. (The design you can see on the right.)

It’s all to raise awareness that getting screening with a colonoscopy at age 50 can save lives.

“When detected early and promptly treated, people often can return to normal lives,” says Donald Summers, MD, colorectal surgeon at Saint Louis University Hospital and a SLUCare physician. “Events like the UNDY 5000 go a long way in raising such awareness.”
