A big thank you to the over 40,000 participants who helped fight breast cancer at Saturday’s 15th annual Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure.
Thanks to your efforts, over $2.1 million was raised. It helps fund several critical programs in the region to help screen and educate women for breast cancer.
For example, Komen funds support Saint Louis University Cancer Center’s Show Me Healthy Women Grant. With that funding, we are able to offer no-cost breast exams, mammograms, pap smears and other women’s health services for those who meet age and income requirements. (For more information about the grant or to schedule an appointment, call 314-268-7038.)
SLUCare breast surgeon Theresa Schwartz, MD, talked about the grant last Friday with KMOX Radio (listen here) but added the Race is more than just raising money. It’s raising awareness.
“The biggest part of the Race is awareness,” she says. “Anything that helps women be able to celebrate recovering from the disease or supporting a family member … that’s an important part.”
Thanks to all of you who helped Race for a Cure. We hope to see you again next year!
